Job Overview: We are seeking a collaborative and detail-oriented Assistant Controller to join our client’s Finance Department and help drive excellence in financial operations. This on-site, direct-hire position based in Lawrenceville, NJ is ideal for candidates with a strong background in financial accounting, compliance, and team leadership. The role plays a key part in managing accounting operations, optimizing financial systems, and supporting strategic financial planning for a mission-driven organization.
Compensation:
Salary up to $150,000/year, commensurate with experience

Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday
Standard business hours (9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
Occasional evening or weekend hours may be required during peak periods
Key Responsibilities of the Assistant Controller:
Manage day-to-day financial operations and ensure timely month-end and year-end closings
Oversee accounting functions including general ledger, payroll entries, endowment accounting, tax compliance, and capital project tracking
Supervise a team responsible for general and endowment accounting, and manage an outsourced provider handling accounts payable, procurement, and tuition billing
Lead the preparation of audited financial statements and serve as the primary contact for external auditors
Ensure compliance with GAAP, internal controls, IRS regulations, and debt policy requirements
Evaluate and enhance financial systems and processes, promoting automation and efficiency
Maintain accurate records for fixed assets, depreciation, and capital expenditures
Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support budget management and reporting
Drive ongoing staff development, documentation of processes, and cross-training initiatives
Qualifications and Skills for the Assistant Controller:
CPA certification preferred
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
Minimum 5 years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit, academic, or mission-driven organization
At least 3 years of supervisory experience in a finance or accounting setting
Strong knowledge of GAAP, internal controls, payroll, accounts payable, and fund accounting
Proficiency with financial systems (experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge NXT or similar platforms preferred)
Advanced Excel and Google Workspace skills
Demonstrated ability to lead teams, manage projects, and work cross-functionally
High integrity, service orientation, and strong communication skills
