Job Title: Optical Engineer
Job Overview:
Contemporary Staffing Solutions is seeking an Optical Engineer to join our client to support the design and development of advanced imaging and microscopy systems. This direct-hire role, based in the Portland, ME area, will contribute to both new product innovation and ongoing improvements of existing optical instrumentation. The position offers an opportunity to blend hands-on optical design, system optimization, and cross-functional collaboration to deliver cutting-edge solutions for research and industrial applications. Candidates should bring deep technical expertise, a detail-oriented mindset, and strong problem-solving skills to drive forward the client’s engineering initiatives.
Compensation:
$130,000 annually with bonus opportunities and relocation assistance available
Work Schedule:
Monday through Friday, standard business hours
Key Responsibilities of the Optical Engineer:
• Lead the design, simulation, and testing of optical and illumination systems for advanced microscopy platforms.
• Develop and refine prototype designs into scalable, manufacturable commercial products.
• Conduct system verification, validation, and performance testing to ensure reliability and quality.
• Create and implement algorithms for image and signal processing to enhance system outputs.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate optical solutions, support documentation, and communicate technical findings to diverse stakeholders.
Qualifications and Skills for the Optical Engineer:
• Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent industry experience.
• Proven track record in product design, development, and commercialization of optical systems.
• Hands-on experience with optical modeling and simulation tools (Zemax strongly preferred).
• Knowledge of microscopy, illumination design, laser systems, and tolerance analysis for manufacturability.
• Background in signal and image processing; proficiency in C/C++ with FPGA familiarity a plus.
• Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to lead technical projects.
• Excellent communication skills, capable of presenting technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
